I got gnome-background-properties to work. I did the following:
mv ~/Wallpapers ~/Wallpapers2 (my personal background images directory under
home directory)

I have a HP dv6106eu laptop (see my post above) with the TSSTcorpCD/DVDW
TS-L632D (seems to be Samsung), and get this problem.
My guess is that HAL polls the drive, and the drive doesn't respond
correctly or in a timely manner, so HAL tries

This sounds very similar to my experience with feisty. I had been using
feisty since the middle of January and I think the problem started
around kernel version 2.6.20-9.
I have not seen the problem after switching back to edgy. I am currently
using Fedora 7 test 4, and I don't get any random

I loaded ubuntu a few weeks ago and was able to load ubuntu or xp when i
booted up , now there is a list of ubuntu options which i assume is the
different updates, ( every time i use it does some updating the latest
yesterday thats when i lost the dual boot option ) But no xp windows

Run freeloader, either on a terminal or through gnome, and set a cron
job to effect it. Doesn't work.
freeloader -q should not call gtk.main() because then it doesn't work
outside of X.

I looked at your xorg.conf. Is there any reason you are using the
UseFBDev option? Try without. I don't know if it is related at all
though.
It is very difficult from your comment to understand what you have tried
and what is blocking you. You mention startx, is that from following
