Hi Brian,
I changed xorg.conf as suggested. On restarting X I got a message saying
Gnome Keyboard setting varied from X keyboard settings, which one to
use. I chose X. I then got about 5 of the same error messages copied below:
/Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various
sudo dpkg -i PACKAGE_FILE would have been enough.

Thanks for your feedback, mocoloco. As stated before this known and
worked on. It implicates a lot more than just switching a handler. The
package archive needs to be tested before to avoid not well chosen
recommends.
