I get the same error message.
Test pages, FF, OOo, all work.
Evince doesn't work, haven't tried other Gnome apps.
I am also on Ubuntu 7.10. I'm printing to a remote printer via IPP
which was setup using the gnome printing applet.

I tested the 2 usepackage lines on my other computer (with non-tweaked advi
bin), and it indeed works. But I think there still is a problem with advi.
Usually I don't use the advi and hyperref packages, and I think they are not
required for using advi.
