I have now realized that the problem was the complexity of alsamixer and
kmix. Some settings cannot be set from the kmix but must be set using
the text-based alsamixer. When I unmuted the IEC958 in alsamixer and
fiddled with the volumes for a while I managed to get the sound working
properly.
Additions based on the original reporters stay on #kubuntu: He tried
also with a back panel usb port, and it worked ok there. Attached is
his pastebinned dmesg from the time the camera was solidly attached to
the front panel port. Looks like a hw power problem in that specific
port to me, and not

You should _uninstall_ the compat-linux-wireless drivers, not reinstall
them. Please get rid of these drivers before you do anything else.
Hardy kernel already includes the b43 and b43legacy drivers, there is no need
for recompiling them from the package prepared by linuxwireless.org. The
