By the way, things have improved slightly. With the absolutely latest
Hardy kernel, boot still hangs for quite a while before succeeding and
sound is still dead, but the ethernet now comes up. The wireless is
still dead, though.

- required to enable ltmodem/LucentAgere winmodem on my IBM ThinkPad. If
I boot into the -generic kernel, all sound works out of the box. If I

As an experiment, I just tried removing and then re-installing kdm-kde4
through Adept manager.
I DID get a dialogue asking which display manager I wanted to use on
this occasion. The default option is kdm rather than kdm-kde4, which
means the problem wouldn't have been due to me accidentally reply
