Okay, sounds like the original issues have all been resolved. The
problem with not being able to set your primary display is already
covered in bug #206528, so that issue is a dupe. AFAIK there is no way
to set that yet. Perhaps by Intrepid or Intrepid+1.

Apparantly the option "AlwaysCore" in the ServerLayout section is no longer
needed. This option was the cause of the problems.

Let me add one comment on how I solved that.
After trying to de-install and re-install virtual box a couple of times
via synaptic which was not successfull at all I finally had a look at
Sun's webpages. The Sun download center provides the most current
version of virtual box, version 1.6.

Actually I was able to get splashy working by activating the framebuffer.
You need to add "vesafb" and "fbcon" (without the quotes) to
/etc/initramfs-tools/modules
and un-blacklist vesafb from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer
Update the initramfs
"sudo update-initramfs -u"
and add the vga=xxx
I have exactly the same problem as Mikko since a few days. I never installed
ubuntustudio and my gdm.conf has the same option:

Uhm, yeah, Debian/Ubuntu have had the MySQL socket there for ages. Any
packaged application looking for it in the wrong place should be fixed.
Any non-packaged app is being installed/run by someone who knows what
they're doing (in theory) and can specify the socket location manually.
