I have the same problem and also think it is a problem with the 2.6.24
kernel. I have tried 2.6.24-17, -18, and -19 with the same results.
I have disabled compiz, nvidia proprietary drivers, and Open GL
screensavers but still have freezes. Trying Alt+SysRq REISUB does not
work since my mouse

Why does the driver allow special characters in the filenames?
NTFS supports several filename namespaces at the same time: DOS, Win32 and
POSIX. While the NTFS-3G driver handles all of them, it always creates new
files in the POSIX namespace

Using kernel 2.6.24-19-generic, I can import files using f-spot or
gthumb but the creation dates are not preserved. I will raise a separate
bug for this.
Plugging the camera in gives the usual window If I press ignore it should mount
the camera card as a usb mass storage
