Just wanted to quickly say I had this problem with my Nokia N80 on

I got KDE's compositing effects work in OpenGL mode.
I just upgraded my xserver-xorg-video-intel to:
2:2.2.1-1ubuntu13.6
My guess is Intrepid is using older intel drivers.
