I've got an identical machine that I wanted to load Ubuntu onto - and
had the same issue.
Specifically, during install the screen goes to full-screen mode,
800x600, and the screen 'folds' over itself so to speak - and the
installation boxes do not fully view.

I hate to admit this, but I just re ran the program the same as I did

I've experienced crashes on this assertion several times with Konqueror 4.1 in
Hardy using the kubuntu-members-kde4 ppa. It happens irregularly when i close
Konqueror (which is not so strange as it's KHTMLFactory's destructor that calls
KHTMLGlobal::finalCheck() which contains the assertion.)
The package has been done by debian. What should I do to push it to
intrepid ?

original reporter of the bug also had. I installed this package, but
still do not experience the issue.
The problem seems to be that you have:
libcairo.so.2 = /usr/local/lib/libcairo.so.2
rather than:

Read mail and played solitaire in Heron. No problems. Booted and logged
into Intrepid and entered mahjongg and made a few moves. Then the error.
The effect I'm interested in is fading a window to see what's
underneath.

alpha of ubuntu intrepid (8.10), when i selected save and close...
firefox hung, and about 5mins later i came back to find apport wanting
