OK, I digged quite a bit. The solution is probably a bit more complex
than it seems. To blacklist a module by default can always break a
working system for somebody else. The fact that another driver is better
for one device does not mean it is useless. For zc0301 this seems small
since there is on

/usr/lib/kde4/bin/ added to this secure_path thingy?

Uinstalled that Windows driver, did updates today and the wl restricted
driver came through which got my card working again and am connected
with wireless now however is seems the problem is with WAP and WEP. Me
and a couple others had to disable it.

NFSv4 homedir and been bumping into this really a lot.
To see what's actually happening, change VERBOSE to 'yes' in
/etc/default/rcS and boot without 'splash', as you'll already know;

I have a similar problem. After boot it works, screen is shut-off after
configured time-out. But after a few hours it stops working. Screen is not
shut-off after time-out. Manually using "> xset dpms force standby/suspend/off"
always works.
