I consider this a bug because every usplash theme has a fixed width
status area but one can set unlimited long status messages.
Overlong strings cause two types of visual glitches:
a. the text will be cut off at the right border of the text area
Only on intreprid, and only during the last week. Can't pinpoint an
exact update in it though.
I am using, forgot to mention it, an ATI X1650 AGP. Other user with this
problem is using an ATI X1600, so it could be an xserver-xorg-video-
radeon R500 bug.

we could also imagine an option to split files without compression for
these needs, that would save time (compression takes a lot of time for

I've installed
xserver-xorg-video-radeon_6.9.0+git20080930.c359c2a3-0ubuntu0tormod_i386.deb
from Tormod's PPA.
Now xv is fine, and Xorg doesn't consume so high CPU.
Although (II) RADEON(0): XAA Render acceleration unsupported on Radeon
9500/9700 and newer. Please use EXA instead. is still in
fixed upstream, thanks for reporting.
