gnome-settings-daemon was not running on session startup because it was
unchecked in System-Preferences-Sessions. After I checked it, the

Sure. Just so its noted, after a recent Kernel Update, my WLAN card didn't
work so I had to apply a firmware update off launchpad called
nic-firmware_1.1_all.udeb
Below is the output of $ apt-cache policy linux-firmware nic-firmware
The drivers shipped in the package nic-firmware (atmel, ipw2100, prism
isl3890) are included in linux-firmware. So, you can safely remove nic-
firmware and install linux-firmware instead.

For example, you try to change from Human to DarkRoom (or NewVawe or

Moreover in others themes the buttons panel aren't consistency with background
panel image.
For a default theme I think this can't be a good way.

Thanks. There's not much evidence in it. The term.log is empty and
there's no apt-term.log. You may need to user superuser privileges in
order to read that file.
It seems that kubuntu-desktop as been held from a previous install.
Can you please try the following command and report the output (
It was Xubuntu 8.04.1 for me too. It wasn't a fresh install however
(sorry, I stated that it was above), but an install of 'xubuntu-
desktop'. It seemed to be missing all the required dependencies, such as
'ubuntu-docs'. 'xubuntu-docs' installs, but apparently that's not all I
need.

Hmmm... I reverted back to Intrepid after all, since YaST is _clearly_
inferior to ubuntus package manager.
The problem seems fixed now... though I'm not sure I can call this a
clean install (kind of a Linux Mint Elyssa x Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex
hybrid, since I began by installing Linux mint, and
