I think the problem is caused by conflicting configuration of PAM and
Unix Consolekit along with faulty setting of ~/.dmrc and ~/.dbus.
This causes crashes due to permission errors in

Hi Matt,
maybe an alternative approach is to make the group password that has
been filled in the configuration dialog be the value that shows up in
the connect dialog. Thus if the user leaves the group password blank
in the configuration dialog, it would be empty also in the connect
dialog.
Do you have im-switch installed? Try to remove im-switch by executing
sudo apt-get remove im-switch or alternatively disable any input
method by executing im-switch -s none. That made the problem disappear
for me (though I cannot use scim/skim now, of course).

building gcc-4.3 on feisty looked like a lot of footwork, and as i don't
use the X-server i upgraded to Intrepid. This was also quite some
footwork, with dependency cycles among other nasty things. ;(
However, gcc-4.3 seems to have this bug fixed. :)

My system persistently crashes with a kernel panic during a copy between
hard disks evident by complete lock-up of the screen, flashing keyboard
LED's and a kernel panic dump to CLI on tty1
I have proven the crash does not occur using other Linux distributions
