This is tricky: It is not really a bug, but a usability problem.

I started looking at the pattern of growth, and noticed that they seemed
to both grow in parallel every 10 seconds or so (and would be stable in
between). So I suspected it was the Detect RANDR (monitor) changes
setting. So, I experimentally turned that off, and the log files are not

I am still seeing issues even with the 2.6.27-7.15 kernel and updated
procps package. Setting tcp_timestamps to 0 does not resolve it for me.

The VMWare environment should indicate that particular
xdg-open follows the default setting of whatever desktop you are using.
I.e. on KDE it will invoke kfmclient in order to access the default KDE
webbrowser and on GNOME it will try to find out which browser to use
AFAIK.
The thing with xdg-open is that it follows the mimetype as primary
