I've tried to reproduce your issue using Ubuntu 8.10 but update-manager
worked as expected! I clicked the orange icon of update-manager and let
it download and install some updates. While it was downloading and
installing the new packages, the icon stayed grey.

laptop. There is an option to shutdown anyway, but if I close the laptop
lid it is easy to not notice the dialog and accidentally leave the
laptop running. Therefore it would be nice to have the shutdown anyway

Continued testing Ubuntu with the x6250 blades, the 8.10 desktop edition
installs OS and grub correctly and boots first time with out a problem.
Seems the problem is only with the server edition.
