I think the problem is that the amd64 version is out of date. Check
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/libgoogle-perftools0 and you'll see
that it's still 0.8-5.1 for some reason. Maybe the build is failing?

I can confirm that with the version of apt-cacher in intrepid,
1.6.4ubuntu1, update-manager is prevented from seeing available upgrades
when invoked as 'update-manager -d' and have also reproduced the regex
warning that occurs. I have also verified that the apt-cacher in
intrepid-proposed, 1.6.4ubu
closing this bug, as per your last comment. feel free to switch back to
new if you upgrade to the latest version and still face this issue.

This is no longer a problem as my new machine runs an nVidia card. I can
