Since I reported this bug, I upgraded all my PCs to jaunty or karmic. At
least the jaunty i386 desktop CD did not install tracker or any search
daemon, so the bug is "being worked around" by default.
I assume the team that decides what is on the CD, what is installed by
default and how it is confi

FYI: I wont do more work than just warning you about the security issue,

Do you have this issue on the stock karmic kernel as well? The mainline
kernels as of now are based on jaunty's config and just adding i915
modeset=1 is not sufficent to enable KMS properly on them. It would be
interesting to hear your results if you could try with the karmic's
2.6.30-7.8 that is -
