Indeed it may be a video card problem.
During those two seconds I cannot hit the turnoff button as it is not visible.
All I see during this time is a white box. After the fade efect is done, the

I've actually not experienced this bug in quite some time now.
In the mean time my kernel was updated to 2.6.28-13-generic, so in
addition to the output of apport-collect -p linux-
image-2.6.28-11-generic 359653 I've also attached the output of apport-
collect -p linux-image-2.6.28-13-generic

echo 3 /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
to get a cold disk cache again. On my (relatively new) system the time after
that is:
$ time /usr/lib/command-not-found foobar
real0m1.851s
user0m0.208s
sys 0m0.144s
--
command-not-found should print something on the console
