I have this problem too, pretty much with my 64bit installations. All
have DRI turned off and while the GDM no longer loops it is because the
buggers just won't boot at all.
I do have my 2 9.04 upgrades to 9.10 working with - driver"vesa" in
xorg.confg. The clean installs (A4 updated and A5)

The patchsets are kernel-specific. They are to be applied on the
appropriate vanilla kernel, and yes, the problem does exist in 2.6.31.
The last kernel+patchset that worked correctly was 2.6.26.8+rt-16.
