So it appears that what's broken is the automatic resolution detection.
The default Resolution setting is Auto, and if left unchanged, I'm
unable to get the HDMI attached monitor to work.
If on the other hand, I actually pick a resolution, like 1600x1200, the
monitor works.

I had the same problem with Dell Dimension 2400: no sound under Ubuntu Jaunty.
After positive test with Ubuntu Karmic, I installed Karmic.
I can confirm that now the sound is 100% OK.
(I was of course not yet able to test other functions etc.)

Right, just to go on record here... The KSM stuff was never in plan
for Karmic. I asked Tim to grab that patchset for a little testing in
early August. The testing showed that it's not quite ready yet, and I
agree that we should drop it for Karmic at this point. It should be
in the upstream
