Sorry for another edit, my comp is 32 bit karmic, latest updates,
notebook, core duo, 32 bit, ati x1400.
On my other comp I have no problems with samba. Its a 64 bit Karmic,
latest updates and it has the same samba config file as the other
computer, so its not a config problem.

I managed to compile a custom kernel using the latest stable branch from
kernel.org (which is 3.6.31), and i just used ubuntu's config file and
skipped all the new features, so i shall do my stress tests and see if
it hangs overnight.

I think the problem is the packages are being matched to the .desktop
files by the name rather than package name. Therefore many packages can
have the same name (ie. gpicview eog) so it shows the application but

I just wanted to say thank you for your patience with me. Shortly after
this report my desktop disappeared, so I re-installed Ubuntu Jaunty and
now everything is great. No problems or bug reports.
More investigation reveals the following behaviour in Karmic:
- if Extra typographic characters option is enabled in layout settings, the
extra characters can be entered, but the ?? issue exists;
- if the said option is disabled, the extra characters can still be entered,

I've got the same problem (v3.1.1 build 9420), when copying between two slides.
It still asks where to copy the slide instead of just inserting it between the
two slides BUT this occurs only when the source slide is copied from a
