When I catch Grub in time, booting into 2.6.28-11 is sufficient to avoid

Background: I originally experienced this problem with an installed
version of Xubuntu Hardy (8.04). I established that the Live CD had the
same bug. As I do not wish to change my LTS installation at present, I
have since tried Live CDs for Jaunty (9.04) and Karmic (9.10) with

I played Deus Ex through wine a few weeks ago perfectly fine with
Unredirect set to false. Of course, that's an outdated game, but I
haven't had any problems graphically since I first disabled it when

slmodemd daemon was tying up the sound system and so the pulseaudio
server couldn't setup the sound for use.

unreliable. Sometimes after boot the IPv6 address is set correctly, but
default route is not set. Usually even IPv6 address is not set.

It is unreasonable to expect users to manually fix apt-get's cache files
when they become corrupted. As a long-time apt-get user who has
encountered this bug frequently, I can attest to its age, and am
surprised it has not been fixed after all these years. For proof, simply
see this bug report
I recently learned fluidsync can also be used as software synthesizer
except it doesn't come with any sound font, unlike timidity that can
play music on its own (because of the package it depends). In short

I installed the policykit from James' PPA, and the bug is still there
(i.e. update-notifier tells me I don't have privileges, rather than
prompting for username and password.
However, I found out that when I run update-notifier-kde on the command-
line, at the stage where I usually
I also got bitten by this (long-winded description of problem and
solution at http://atlanticlinux.ie/blog/?p=137) - you can recover from
this by booting from the install cd in rescue mode after installation
and purging the dmraid package from your installation -- but I'm +1 for
*not* installing
