For me it does the exact opposite, xsplash appears long after the
desktop ready.

In addition to my Karmic x64 install, I noticed this is also broken on Debian
Unstable i686 for me. So maybe it is upstream? Found this:

I can confirm the same problem with Karmic Alpha6 + updates, running on
a EEE 1000H netbook
If screensaver(Black screen) and powermanager both is set to switch off the
screen after for example 1 minute:
- The screen fades out after exactly 1 min., then the backlight turns off but
switch on aga
