Kubuntu Karmic x64, I'm experimenting the same issue as ilna describes: After a upgrade KDE starts, but mouse and keyboard(s) are not usable. I tried with gdm, but it does not start. (upstart) I see that no upstart service will be started on boot in my machine. Maybe this is the whole problem!
