that the sk_disk_open() call spins up the disk even before the sleep

I had similar results. I then used:
sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core
and then update-notifier-kde -d ran for a while until it crashed at some
file not found error..
after removing the lock: /var/dpkg/lock
the system was able to fix itself using
sudo dpkg --configure -a
my system

I've traced the reason for the spin-up to the
disk_smart_read_thresholds() call at the end of sk_disk_open() in
atasmart.c.
Apparently the SMART Read Thresholds command implies spinning up the
disk, at least on my and Ricardo's controllers. I wonder why
libatasmart4 always executes that call

cause for the problem: libatasmart can't query the sleep state of a
drive without opening it first, and opening a disk executes the Read

o have repaired the problem on my install. system settings advanced
policykit authorization org.freedesktop the packagekit project install
signed packages
then removed my existing user entry, add clicked grant to add it again, this
time with no constraints. now i do not get prompted for
