I can replicate the problem by manually suspending the system. I have
also discovered that keying ctrl+alt+F2 produces a brief flash on the
display and ctrl+alt+delete will then reboot the system.

Hello Geir,
thank you for the freezetest kernels.
I tried them out with Karmic. My result is: no freezes happend with none of the
kernels freezetest1, freezetest8 and freezetest9.
My graphic card is a Intel 855 and shows this values in lspci:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 8
I've also managed a similar solution on amd64, by unpacking the jaunty
packages with "dpkg -x" and manually copying then files to /usr/lib.
(This is very evil and I wouldn't recommend it in the general case.)

I think I have the same issue since I upgraded to Karmic.
I have an Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 and an Amilo LSL 3230T screen which has a
native resolution of 1920*1080. At the login screen the resolution is correct
but after I login it switches to 1440*900. It is possible to change it back
manually
Thomas,
FYI-- attached are some quilt patches addresses several of the bugs
