I made a strace log about gnome-settings-daemon a few days ago when it

This happens for me maybe once every couple of months. I've never been
able to intentionally reproduce it and am not sure what causes it. It
does seem to be accompanied by a lot of GTK error messages in the
terminal though. Next time this happens I'll record them.

Same problem for me (Ubuntu 9.10 + Firefox 3.5.7 on Acer Aspire One 110,
intel GMA + Compiz).
My work around is to open an new window and then closing it (ctrl+n,
ctrl+w). After that auto completion starts working again in my original
window. (The new window opened also has working auto
not fixed for me with the proposed cairo package.

Yes, that worked for me too, using the Mini 100c!
But you don't have to install the alsa sound package.
Just
- install linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic
- reboot
- open a terminal, enter alsamixer, press tab, and set both internal and
front mic sliders to 100%
- press
oh wow. Not an issue. I'm onto 9.10 64 bit now, and it plays fine.

KDE 4.1.x has a power-consuming bug: as long as a screensaver is set
(even if set to blank), monitor DPMS standby/poweroff won't work. AFAIK
there's a blank screensaver by default, this means that too many kubuntu

When there is an error in some system components, gvfsd-metadata can segfault.
You can see one example in my dmesg. In my case, it segfaults after a WiFi
problem.
