I had an error message in Simple Scan too, indicating that it was unable
to access a Mustek BearPaw 1200 CU while I'm using a Mustek 1200 UB
Plus.

After some troubles (new kernel 2.6.3x won't install, initrd files are not
generated, grub menu aren't updated, old kernel 2.6.28 doesn't work with new
packages from new distribution) I finally ended the installation of Ubuntu
10.04 LTS.

Ah, that was what I feared: your bug is different from the password-less
issue. So let's say the latter is bug 525642, and deal with your problem
here. What does 'ps x|grep keyring' return, with and without autologin
enabled? What errors do you get in /var/log/auth.log in both cases?

I would like to make a few updates, improvements to Chris's very helpful
howto/workaround for building your own debug symbols (post #23):
- doing just `apt-get linux` will get 'linux-meta' package which we don't need:
let apt figure out which source package to get.
- also don't install
In my opinion the whole workspace thing is a hack implemented against the
way X is supposed to work. Each workspace is not traditionally addressable.
E.g. I cannot choose which workspace/pane my windowed application opens in
- it's always the current one. E.g both
