I didn't choose a session, so it was default choice if any available.

never reboot (only after some updates).

I fixed this by rewriting /etc/exports on a lucid client, the same
filehandle message was there and vanished afterwards, but could not do
anything on karmic clients, so I am forcing an unwanted lucid upgrade on
the server (server kernel). This is a major bug, I will keep you posted

Perhaps this could help :
- when you start gimp and directly select create - xscanimage, the menu is grey
- if you create a new image and then select create - xscanimage, the menu is
accessible and yaou can scan an image.

And the expected outpout would contain Subject, Author, Producer, etc...
?
Could you install it from the repositories and test again?
Just undo what you did to install it and install extractor.

I own a Dell XPS M1530 and the default Lucid kernel is unusable because of a
bug with the nouveau driver. Basically, it boils down to a bad EDID problem:

Can also be reproduced by ssh -t lucid-test sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6
start.
Adding -b to start-stop-daemon solves it, but might have side-effects in
case of start failure...
