a limit to the block size available on 32bit (if that limit was 2G or
just under it wouldn't surprise me), on 64bit there is a similar limit

If you're considering a re-install, it might be wiser to re-install to
Karmic to restore brightness adjustment functionality. The brightness
issue isn't related to whether it's a fresh install of Lucid or upgrade

I can confirm that ubuntu probably has a problem with intel graphics,
and that in particular the brightness setting is one of the symptoms.
When I ran karmic, the graphics worked fine, including brightness
adjustment (with applet and with function keys).

There are two things called 'time'.
The /usr/bin/time program is what the manual page refers to, however some
shells have their own built in time that is simpler;
bash has one that doesn't understand the -f
In bash if you do help time it will give you the details of it's
time; if you wish to

behaviour if one of the startup applications blocks for a while; the

Same problem with a Kubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64-bits fully upgraded.
It happens like each 1 of 2 boots. Mostly the first time I try to boot it crash
and then it works after rebooting.
