experience: it still makes it to the login screen but crashes as soon as

It is not scrotwm bug at all. I just got same issue with dwm. Last think
I did was alt-- (alt left arrow). What I saw on console tty1 was
output of some commands I typed in xterm.
So this must be bug of X. Once I had xterm and I did sudo su - and after
crash I got root shell in console tty1 !!!

I have noticed the a number of daemons do not start in Ubuntu 10.04 - it
seems the since version 6 Ubuntu users upstart. So I have created a
temporary fix until it gets sorted.
as root in /etc/init create a file called temp-fix.conf with the following

I suggest you try to find out whether halevt functions properly by
running it in the foreground:

Thanks for your input. That explains why I fixed the fstab problem, yet
still have my Wine problem. I still cannot access the CD Rom from Wine
because I still do not have a softlink in ~/.wine/dosdevices. ls -l
