This sounds similar to the problems that I am having.
Two months ago, I upgraded my Acer laptop to Lucid 10.04, and things haven't
been right since.
The screen was badly messed up after the upgrade. I had to find a workaround to
even see anything
on the screen. Alas, at this moment I cannot

A new version of VirtualBox (3.2.6) has been released, with a work
around for Linux hosts with the ext4 filesystem, which is most likely
the cause of this bug. Downloaded the newest version of VBox, and

Hi,
I am facing the same error- after updating Ubuntu 9.10- but when I try
to set the root as '/dev/sda1' in this step:
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31-14-generic root=/dev/sda1
it is not there( there is no sda in /dev)
Hence, I am not able to boot into ubuntu now :(

here is an strace of the X process during the 100% cpu lockup.
I'm going to switch to the proprietary driver for a while and see if I
get lockups with that. But I really want to run the open driver (it's
so much more flexible), so I'm happy to switch back if you want me to
try anything.

update-intel-microcode does not find latest available microcode update
Fresh install of Lucid on desktop PC here, same issue, killing backend.
