If you're using a 3rd party package of chromium already containing the codecs,

Found that adding a line to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf "options snd-
hda-intel model=laptop-amic" and rebooting allows the external mic in
jack to work, it does not fix the internal mic.
I tried the line: "options snd-hda-intel model=auto", that did not fix

I should add that I have activated "hintslight" as hintstyle for all
fonts in ~/.fonts.conf in order to get proper sub-pixel hinting in
Firefox in the first place. Adding areteichi's configuration for
Japanese fonts fixes the problem for me.

I noticed a similar bug 643045 which sounds like a duplicate of this
one. They noted they were able to boot with the mainline v2.6.35.3
stable kernel, but are unable to boot with v.2.6.35.4. Not sure if you
notice the same results? It might help narrow down the point of
regression.

I have this under 10.10 AMD64:
