I tried removing libass in order to see what other packages would be
removed. Synaptic says that removing libass would also remove VLC but
not mplayer.
Since this memory leak is not present in VLC, I think that we can't blame
libass.

More info : after a while, il noticed that the problem only happens after
rebooting from Windows.
A reboot from Ubuntu, or a fresh start is fine.

the System clean up could not complete... dialog.

I have now successfully tested the latest daily build of Maverick LiveCD.
The bug still occurs exactly as described.
Unfortunately I cannot personally test the upstream kernel as the

oops, i take that back about the solution for 10.10RC on thinkpad edge.
the audio output seems to stick to the first option: if i turn on the computer
with a jack plugged in, then only the external audio will work (irrespective if
i unplug it or not). if i turn it on without anything plugged in,
this is also affecting Maverick RC amd64...

How much RAM was available on the tested omap device? At least for me
