I cannot reproduce the problem. VLC asks for 80% opacity by default not
for full transparency. And it works fine for me (Qt4.6.3 and KDE 4.4.7).
Make sure you have not configured opacity to 0 in the VLC settings.

When I log on to any of my accounts (gmail, facebook and msn) I can see
who is online, but I can't receive or send messages to them. I don't get
a error message, but
I forgot to add that I'm on a 32-bit system.
The weird thing is that in sites like www.jal.com and www.1g1g.com the
characters are displayed correctly, but the subtitles in TED.com do not.
Also, hovering the mouse over the CC (closed captions) button in
youtube (like in this video

When I tried the update from proposed, banshee was marked for installation.

Reinstalling nvidia-common solved the problem. Thanks!
