This worked! Just backed up then deleted
/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/20-libgphoto2. Now I can mount my
Sansa Clip in MSC mode, as I was able to do in earlier Ubuntu versions.

that launches vlc via strace and logs the output to a file.
