my current term.log contains an example of the failed bind9 startup. I
got a "crash report detected" alert everytime I ran an aptitude command,
this shows the most recent which happened while I was removing some
fonts (presumably unrelated).

This happens randomly about once a day since upgrading from Lucid to
Maverick. Sometimes it causes the system to freeze, sometimes only a
specific application. In this very instance, it completely froze mplayer
(even though the logs talk about Python).

I installed the 2.6.36 Kernel, as mikeos instructed, and it is working much
better :)
although I have observed two instances where the screen did not power up on

Vish: Yes but distros like Ubuntu should take care of the end user and
shield the end user from shortfalls of the upstream. As long as the
upstream doesn't release a fixed version, it's always valuable for an
end-user distro to release a provisional hack in its repo.

Okay, I'm not sure what the package name is for the dock you're
referring to, but from your description it sounds like you're running
unity, so I'm reassigning the package there for diagnosis. It sounds

When I run an Ubuntu Desktop Edition session, I believe it is actually

Ok no prob. I think maybe it is a unity issue. See if you can reproduce
it with the classic desktop, with desktop effects turned on.
Also, is it just the Applications window that shows this behavior, or is
it similar for any popup dialog that should overlay another window?
