As a GTimeLog-specific workaround, I recommend setting
'prefer_old_tray_icon = no' in ~/.gtimelog/gtimelogrc. I'll make that

From what I can see, the current ddeb dbgsym packages have the gnome-
settings-deamon binary in them which for some reason they didn't when I

No, startx other solution did not work, initial ubuntu screen disintegrates

Ok try this:
sudo apt-get clean
then
sudo apt-get update ~/Desktop/Update-Log
sudo apt-get upgrade ~/Desktop/Upgrade-Log
