So I tried JH's solution and it didn't work. Just to make sure I'm not
skipping a step here's what I did:
1) after initial GPU hang, I logged in via ssh, edited /etc/apt/sources.list
2) added the gpg key
3) sudo apt-get update
4 sudo apt-get upgrade -u
5) restart
6) a few minutes after login,

Happened to me when I was compiling the pdf with pdflatex in Texmaker.
The pdf was already open in Evince..and usually the view refreshes
automatically when the file has changed.
Only this time it crashed.

As reported by the developer at Gnome's Bugzilla, this has been fixed
upstream. https://launchpad.net/~pedrocastro/+archive/ppa/ has packages
with the fix implemented. (I've tried 1.1.0.2-1ppa1~lucid1 and can
confirm that it does indeed fix the issue.)

I tried shotwell 0.8. Same problem. But I can start and automatically
scan my library till crash. Then start again and again. After a while
and a lot of crashes it indexed all my pictures.

the other way is to add the ppa repository in synaptic (in the options
menu) and update the package by clicking the reload button and the apply
one.
this should be easy but I'm not sure about the correctness of it since I
prevere the command line way... :)

I also noticed which the computer fan starts to overwork during restart
