Using Natty, I see this happen since about alpha2. That was when I reinstalled
root (ext4)
After machine restart, instead of the GRUB boot menu I see the aubergine
background and the fans are working.
After another reboot the menu comes up fine
I don't know if my problem is related to this, but after a recent
upgrade (of maverick), I could not view videos on youtube anymore,
firefox suggested to install flash plugin. I chose Adobe Flash Player
(installer), yet knowing that I have earlier done this. It came up with

I finally observed the problem in another operating system! It was
harder to spot because it was nowhere near as bad as it was in Ubuntu,
but it must be a hardware or firmware problem that the recent shop tests
failed to detect.

I don't think the xserver supports multiple graphics cards (as in
hybrid graphics). If the BIOS allows you to select the card that you'd
like to use, then I think it should work, otherwise you're stuck with

access to the Karmic box that problem was originally produced on) and
can confirm that on the stock kernel, the problem is present, and on
your patched kernel, the problem is resolved.

I would like to confirm that the problem described by Thomas is
(apparently) present on my machine 0203A16 (judging from the model
number and the link it is a very similar machine). I am currently
struggling to try to port Thomas's fix for my system.

But nowaday every computer is sold with two graphic cards, since the new
processors integrate one. I don't think that the BIOS gives you the
option to choose a card. Besides, I am getting confused, whose fault
is this, nvidias driver or xserver?
