Having ran the classic desktop for 24+ hours now, I am not noticing any
unusual memory usage from Compiz. It hovers around 15mb. I am also
using proprietary Nvidia drivers on this computer.

I found that disabling Compiz with the command metacity --replace and
then setting the screensaver to blank greatly alleviated my remote
connection problems. The screensaver was causing some problems (probably
my bad for choosing Electric Sheep), but I was usually able to restart
the vino-server

I encountered the same problems as the above posters, both when
upgrading from 10.04, and, later, when doing a clean install. In each
instance I tried purging and reinstalling grub using a live-cd following
this guide: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1581099. I also
tried restoring
