splash screen, I get an error message telling me that a command has
timeouted (lvscan, IIRC), and it had been terminated. I removed the
snapshot and it booted all right.

this is happening with me too.
running linuv mint 12...
backup is fine until it gets to a 20GB virtualbox image...then just sits there.
high cpu usage.
never had this problem in the past. backing up to an external 1TB drive.

No this does not happen because I'm using GNOME-Shell, not Unity, as
explained earlier. GNOME-Shell does not have an icon that changes colour
when messages are received.

This does not reproduce on my Thinkpad W510 on the GA, proposed, or
ubuntu-x-swat-x-updates oneiric PPA versions of the nvidia-current
driver. Are there some tests I can help perform on my system to help
close this bug?

I tried installing Ubuntu again using ext3 as file system instead of
ext2 on all partitions and it has succeeded this time.
This is the excerpt of the Syslog file where the installation stopped
with ext2:
