Today, when I turned the computer on, it forgot the layout switching key
and the last of the three keyboard layouts I had set before.

might be an EFI System Partition, but it's hard to tell.
/var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/installer/partman would be
helpful in determining whether your problem is actually related to this

Its seriously getting on my nerves. I've been copying a whole load of
old disks to my hard drive so i could get rid of them - they're taking
too much room.
It works for the first time, but it shuts down after clicking Copy
CD/DVD for the next CD, no messages shown as the bug description says.

Since Angelo mentioned USB power management, perhaps one could try the
following:
echo PCI_DEVICES_PM_ENABLE=false | sudo tee /etc/pm/config.d/pci_devices
sudo pm-powersave false
sudo pm-powersave true
and see if this changes the behaviour

@Tpugliese - it's not in System Settings, it's in dconf. You have to:
1. Ensure you have unity-greeter 0.2.8-0ubuntu1 installed
2. Creating a file called: /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/50_unity-
greeter.gschema.override
3. Place in this file:
[com.canonical.unity-greeter]

I fully agree with you, yet after I updated my Ubuntu, things got
better. You can try updating it.
