Looks like something has left some .lock files in place on the files
used for user management. This does happen from time-to-time.
Have a look in /etc/ for any files ending in *.lock and remove them if

I can also confirm this exact problem occurring in 12.04 32-Bit, in a
server configuration with dnsmasq. Squid is configured to use 127.0.0.1
(dnsmasq) as a name server. dnsmasq is configured with a set of upstream
DNS servers.

We should get debian to rebase to something more recent. Debian unstable
is at version 0.56, and the latest upstream version is 1.0.3 .

Julian, this is a fresh install maas-servers only. I reinstalled the
server and I succesfully added the first node, but when tried the next
one, again the time out error. I do this *after* the maas-import-isos.

You can replace pam_check_host_attr yes with
pam_authz_search
