After reading the comment from the linux-media list, I decided to try
and unplug my computer overnight to see if it reset the 'firmware
uploaded' state on my card. It seemed to, so upon booting it up today, I
was able to upload the firmware without any issues. Perhaps it's worth

I couldn't agree more with Peter (comment #76).
This problem still seems to exist in Kubuntu 12.04.
I just bought a Seagate Expansion drive 1 TB and while the little USB
device notifier plasmoid dutifully unmounts the drive and reports that
it is safe to remove it, the drive is still spinning
