Server AMD64. I did so non-destructively, i.e. chroot'ed into what
would become /target, did 'mkdir old-machine; mv -iv * old-machine/'
and then had the partitioner re-use the partition as / without

Oh, I missed part of your comment. You can check the output of running
"/usr/lib/update-notifier/apt-check" to see if it's a bug with the
update-notifier-common package. If it's not that, then the update daemon
isn't getting notification when the update files change, and this would
be a kernel bug.
This functionality works. It must be something else wrong with your
system. Maybe you permanently hid the update notifications?

I cannot touch nor click one area of the clickpad and use another finger to

The issue is present also in 12.10 alpha 3 of ubuntu that i tried.
I tried 3.60-030600rc3-generic i686 kernel but this didnt fix the issue.

The tests were made on Precise with all updates (12.04.1).
I just reinstalled the netbook with Precise, because wifi did not work any more
after the ndiswrapper test (maybe I did something wrong in the uninstall
process).

Problem affected me as well. Hardware is a Dell Inspiron with Radeon HD
6450. Anyway, disabling plymouth in Grub does work for me. So no more
freezes after this, until now.

finally got a libreoffice crash, reported as bug #1041865
it is on Quantal i386 logged as gnome-classic (unity purged & no ppa
around). I have libreoffice-gtk installed, as removing it is not a
solution (menu icons unusable) but seems related with this issue.
