it ended up being a problem with the nvidia driver (I have nvidia Geforce GT
540M)
solved it by install bumblebee:
sud apt-get remove nvidia-current

Yes, the issue persits when booting into the Quantal fresh install. I
managed to install by manually cooling the laptop, but it was hard. The
only way to solve this that I know of is to install Bumblebee and
nvidia-current.

I wasn't able to reproduce the bug in Ubuntu 12.10 any more.
During the process I also changed back from SSD to HDD (no other
hardware changes), so it might be still a good idea to verify if the bug

gcc -I$(pg_config --includedir) -L$(pg_config --libdir)
test_postgres.c -lpq
Putting -lpq after the .c file name fixes it.
But it'll still be a problem for Makefiles that append -lpq to LDFLAGS.
That worked on natty but at a minimum Makefiles will have to be
*phew*
that was a relief, since the updated -intel package fixed a critical
bug.. so I'd rather not see any regression due to it :)

Before updating I was using Nvidia driver 302.17
But as Xserver updated this drive is not compatible anymore.
Instead I installed nvidia-current, but when I start the computer I get a black

older libvirt and much newer qemu-kvm. Please try with stock quantal

I have the same behavior between 3.7.0-030700rc1 and 3.5.0-17 :
- I open a session I open a terminal and do 'uname -r' to verify which kernel I
am using and I wait
- the fan makes some noise
- and the stops after 1 or 2 minutes
- total silence during some 30secs
- and the the fan comes back
I had to uninstall fglrx because of a running in low graphics mode problem
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1068644).
Can it be linked with the fan problem ?

I tested this using the test case provided and received a crash when
using the not proposed version of the dist-upgrader. After switching to
the the -proposed version I no longer receive the crash and was able to
view the details of the distribution upgrade.
