Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10, I started experience this happening.
It sometimes happens that Nautilus hangs. It's eating 100% of my CPU,
the window is darkened, I can't do anything on the desktop etc.

getting it through loading a HTML web page which retrieves pictures from

the 'fancy' plugin in claws-mail which uses libwebkitgtk.

I figured the IO was due to messing around with around 50GB of IMAP
folders. It stablized afterwards and still working great. Havent been
banned from gmail today so I'd say its very good progress if not
completely fixed in my case.

Irving - I tried the "try" build. After thunderbird started it began
indexing 11000+ emails and started downloading from different folders.
I had to exit it before it stabilized because it consumed an extremely
large amount of memory and my system became extremely unresponsive.

Compact. My .thunderbird folder went from 55G to 4.2GB after 20 minutes

When I start Nautilus in my home folder after start-up, it uses 100% cpu
