"I would hope it's obvious to everyone, but it's not the font you want
to explicitly scale. It's everything you want to scale based on the
detected monitor DPI. Something like:

OK, forget the dash. It seems better after restarting. But the panel,
launcher and tooltips all fail to scale, despite the fact that their
fonts do.

OK, so in summary:
Mesa 9.0 in quantal reports:
OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x301)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0
which makes Unity slow (bug 1055936).
However Mesa 9.1 reports:
