When you choose Shared to other computers in network-manager to create
a network, the IP addresses are always 10.42.0.X. This is bad enough,
but it doesn't check if those addresses are already in use on another
interface, blowing up both networks and messing up routes.
A fix
The brcompat module does work in raring; however you need to make sure
that
1) you are using the dkms version of the openvswitch module, not the
stock kernel one
You can do this by stopping the openvswitch-* daemons, unloading the
openvswitch module and then reloading it to pickup the dkms
I'm also affected by this bug. I stopped the backup of my 30GB VDI after
8h with apparently 0% success.

Seems like there is some work done in the 3.8-rc4 regarding xhci driver.
From the changelog:

Same problem here, freezes were infrequent on 12.04, only occasional.
Since some updates were installed on 14-01-2013, freezes happen at least
once a day to my work PC, both when idle and loaded.

few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.
Please help us by testing this new package. See
--parallel=fork *requires* subunit because it uses a subunit feature to
collect the test results.
